Telluride Mountain Club’s Summer Events Calendar
The Telluride Mountain Club is a 501(3)(c) who’s mission is advocate for safe, accessible, enjoyable and respectful opportunities for human-powered recreational activities in the Telluride region, through education, awareness and collaboration. This summer, we are collaborating with many regional entities and business on trail work days, hikes, and more. We will be adding to this event list as time goes on so check back in with us. We hope you will consider joining us this summer and giving back to our region’s trails!
Completed Events:
JUNE
Sunday, June 30 – Group Hike – Liberty Bell/Clay Way Exploration Hike
- Please RSVP to this hike by emailing telluridemountainclub@gmail.com (prior to Sunday).
- Meeting time is 9:30 am & the meeting location is in front of Jagged Edge Mountain Gear (223 E Colorado Ave).
- Please bring your own water, snacks/lunch, sunscreen, and hat. Please wear proper hiking clothes and hiking shoes. Be prepared for any type of weather (i.e. rainstorms or even snow).
- You will need to sign a Telluride Mountain Club waiver prior to hiking.
- This hike will be a fun and steep sunny side hike utilizing Liberty Bell, Clay Way and more. Plan on hiking for at least 5 miles, and ascending approximately 1,800 feet.
JULY
Tuesday, July 16 – Summer Sessions: Intro to Rock Climbing
in conjunction with Mountain Trip
- Please RSVP for this intro clinic by emailing telluridemountainclub@gmail.com.
- $50 for Telluride Mountain Club members, $75 for non-members.
- Meeting time and location, TBD.
- Introduction to Rock Climbing (full day): Introduce new or interested climbers to the sport. Learn to belay, tie in to the rope, perform safety checks and climb.
- You will be required to sign a waiver prior to joining this intro clinic.
- *Must have 6 people to run.
Thursday, July 25 – Telluride Mountain Club’s Annual Summer BBQ and Membership Drive!!
- 5:15 pm – 7:45 pm in Telluride Town Park core!
- Join us for food by Fat Alley, live music by TRICO, drinks, a silent auction, raffle and more. This is our annual summer event, we hope you can make it!
- $15 for individuals, $50 for a family (includes event + year membership)

AUGUST
Sunday, August 4 – Summer Sessions: Anchor Building, Cleaning and Basic Rescue
in conjunction with Mountain Trip
- Please RSVP for this climbing clinic by Thursday, August 1st by emailing telluridemountainclub@gmail.com.
- $50 for Telluride Mountain Club members, $75 for non-members.
- Meeting time and location, TBD.
- Anchor Building & Basic Rescue (full day): Learn to build and clean a variety of anchors off of bolts. Learn the knots and materials required. Learn best practices for cleaning anchors, both lowering and rappelling. Learn basic Self Rescue techniques in a single pitch setting.
- You will be required to sign a waiver prior to joining this intro clinic.
- *Must have 3 people to run.
Thursday, August 8 – Trail Work – Sneffels Highline
in conjunction with Jagged Edge Mountain Gear
- Meeting time is 8:30 am at Jagged Edge. Jagged Edge will be hosting coffee prior to trail work and beers post trail work at their shop – Jagged Edge (223 E Colorado Ave).
- We’ll be doing basic maintenance: brushing, drainage work and pulling rocks on the Sneffels Highline Trail. Be prepared for a lot of vertical and hiking on this trail work day!
- Please bring your own snacks, lunch, sunscreen, hat, plenty of water, and work gloves!
- Volunteers need to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. Volunteers need to wear a helmet, if you don’t want to wear the USFS helmet, bring your climbing or mountain bike helmet. You will be required to sign a waiver prior to trail work.
Thursday, August 15 – Trail Work – Jud Wiebe River Crossing Trail Work
in conjunction with the Telluride Tourism Board
- Meeting time will be 9am at the visitor’s center on Main Street (across from the Sheridan). The Telluride Tourism Board will be hosting coffee and pastries so come a few minutes early to enjoy!
- We will be working on a ford/river crossing on the Jud Wiebe trail where the old bridge was removed. Your feet will get wet! Please wear shoes that can accommodate this.
- Please bring your own snacks, lunch, sunscreen, hat, plenty of water, and work gloves! Volunteers need to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes.
- Volunteers need to wear a helmet, if you don’t want to wear the USFS helmet, bring your climbing or mountain bike helmet. You will be required to sign a waiver prior to trail work.
Tuesday, August 20 – Summer Sessions: Learn to Lead Climb
in conjunction with Mountain Trip
- Please RSVP to this course by Friday, August 16th by emailing telluridemountainclub@gmail.com.
- $50 for Telluride Mountain Club members, $75 for non-members.
- Meeting time and location, TBD.
- Intro to Lead Climbing (full day): Teach climbers interested in taking the next step in their climbing career how to lead climb, with a focus on gear placement and trad anchor building.
- You will be required to sign a waiver prior to joining this intro clinic.
- *Must have 3 people to run.
Friday, August 23 – Trail Work – Magic Meadows
in conjunction with BootDoctors
- Meeting time will be 9am at the Alta Lakes Road turnoff. BootDoctors will graciously be hosting a BBQ post trail work at their Mountain Village location. Thanks BootDoc team!
- We will start at the bottom of the new Magic Meadows trail, work our way up and throw the slash aside, cleaning the new corridor.
- Please bring your own snacks, lunch, sunscreen, hat, plenty of water, and work gloves! Volunteers need to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. Volunteers need to wear a helmet, if you don’t want to wear the USFS helmet, bring your climbing or mountain bike helmet. You will be required to sign a waiver prior to trail work.
SEPTEMBER
Wednesday, September 11 | 5:30 pm in town park core – Summer Sessions: Intro to Mountain Running
with Sarah Lavender Smith, Sam Tischendorf & Tara Butson- Join us to learn what mountain running is all about and how it differs from road and trail running.
- We’ll cover how to enjoy running Telluride’s mountains without getting completely out of breath or hurting yourself; the proper gear, clothing, hydration and fuel you need to stay safe and comfortable; uphill and downhill technique on technical terrain.
- Agenda: 5:30 – 6:00 pm covering the basics, quick Q&A, then head to Bear Creek Trail for an uphill and downhill running technique overview.
- Sarah Lavender Smith of Telluride, an accomplished ultrarunner and running coach, will lead the demonstration. She is the author of The Trail Runner’s Companion: A Step-by-Step Guide to Trail Running and Racing, from 5Ks to Ultras (available at Between the Covers bookstore) and has successfully competed in many of North America’s most challenging mountainous ultramarathons. She will be joined by Sam Tischendorf of Boot Doctors, who organizes the Telluride Running Club, and Tara Butson of Telluride Adventures, both experienced mountain runners. Tara and Sam are directing the October 5 Deep Creek Half Marathon (put on by Telluride Box Canyon Running), which is a great introductory-level mountain run; find out more info here.
- Free for Telluride Mountain Club members, suggested $10 donation for non-members.
Saturday, September 21 – Summer Sessions: Intro to Fly Fishing
in conjunction with Telluride Outside- Please RSVP for this intro to fly fishing clinic by emailing telluridemountainclub@gmail.com. First come, first served.
- Meet at Telluride Outside (121 West Colorado Avenue) at 9:00 am. Plan to be in the field until 5:00 pm.
- $40 for Telluride Mountain Club members, $100 for non-members. You must purchase a one-day fishing license in addition in order to attend.
- Telluride Outside provides everything but your lunch. Please pack your own lunch, snacks and water!
NOTE: If you are interested in helping with the Magic Meadows trail build outside of the scheduled dates, we encourage you to get out. My husband Philip Werner and I are interested in this club. We are in Telluride through October – with a few trips back to Houston to work now and then). Looks like there are still a few activities we could participate in this year. Hope to see you soon
