Valley Floor Trail Enhancements Complete:

New Upgrades Ensure Inclusive and Enjoyable Experience for All Users

August 22, 2024

The Valley Floor Trail, one of the region’s most popular and heavily trafficked trails, has recently undergone significant modifications to ensure a more positive and inclusive experience for users of all ability levels. This project was a joint effort led by the Telluride Mountain Club, in collaboration with the Telluride Adaptive Sports Program (TASP), U.S. Forest Service (USFS), Town of Telluride and Big Loop Trails.

The initial idea to improve the Valley Floor Trail stemmed from conversations with the Telluride Adaptive Sports Program. “As one of the more popular and beginner-friendly trails in the area, it is important that the Valley Floor offers a consistent user experience, ample passing opportunities, and easy navigation,” said TMtC’s Trails Director, Jordan Carr. “Our partnership with TASP highlighted these needs and provided an opportunity to enhance the trail for everyone.”

As one of the few trails in the area with a gentler grade, the Valley Floor Trail is a favorite among visitors, families, and those new to riding. The recent improvements provide a smoother, more consistent experience from start to finish, making it an ideal environment for building skills. The upgraded trail also offers a simpler loop option for mountain bikers descending from Mountain Village or connecting to the regional bike path.

These modifications are particularly beneficial for adaptive mountain bikers. Tim McGough, Ski & Snowboard Program Director at TASP, emphasized the impact: “The Valley Floor Trail project is a huge enhancement for our adaptive mountain biking program at TASP… it is such a stunning landscape to introduce and challenge adaptive mountain bikers on, and we could not be happier  with the improvements.”

This project highlights the joint efforts it takes to maintain and improve the trail systems in our region. “I’m thrilled with the collaboration among the region’s stakeholders on this project,” said TMtC’s Operations Director, Sophie Fabrizio. “Every partner in this endeavor put tremendous effort into making these trail improvements worthwhile. Special recognition goes to the volunteers from the Telluride Adaptive Sports Program and Telluride Rotary Club who assisted with the finishing work. The support of our entire community was crucial, and the dedication of those who recreate here really shone through.”

The Valley Floor Trail’s upgrades are a significant benefit to the Telluride community. Whether for seasoned riders or those just starting, the trail now provides an enjoyable and reliable experience, enhancing outdoor recreation opportunities for everyone. “Thank you to the Telluride Mountain Club for doing what it does best, bringing stakeholders together to open up access to public lands for all,” McGough added.
