BILK CREEK EROSION REPORT
The Telluride Mountain Club was notified by San Miguel County about tresspass and erosion problems at the Bilk Creek climbing area.
A site visit confirmed that there is a problem at the right side (South side) of the cliff, where some climbers had been taking a direct path up to the summit instead of using the established trail on the left side (North side) of the cliff. Please avoid taking this short cut around the right side, as it goes straight up a very steep hillside and is causing substantial erosion. Also, the short cut on the right side of the cliff is crossing property owned by the adjacent private landowner.
The Bilk Creek wall is owned by San Miguel County and was set aside as a public parcel in 2000 as a collaborative effort between the Telluride Mountain Club, the County and the former owners, Charles and Jesse Price. The parcel is very small, only including the immediate area around the base of the cliff and the access trail on the North side.
The small cliff is popular for setting up a top rope, is quick and easy to access from Town, and has challenging, steep routes for a good workout.
Please stay on the established trail which is the responsible way to access the top of the cliff, avoiding unnecessary erosion and maintaining good relations with the adjacent private landowners.
